Great Tang All Day Mall

Great Tang All Day Mall (大唐不夜城) is in southern Xi'an's Yanta District. Metro Line 3 to Dayanta Station (大雁塔站), Exit C -- you emerge directly at the north end of the pedestrian street. Metro Line 4 to Datang Furongyuan Station (大唐芙蓉园站) for the south end. Buses 5, 21, 22, 23, 24, 30, 224, 500, 601 all stop nearby. From Bell Tower: taxi 25 min (25 CNY) or Metro Line 2 to Xiaozhai, transfer to Line 3. The street runs north-south for 2.1km from Big Wild Goose Pagoda (north) to Kaiyuan Square (south). It is pedestrian-only after 4pm.

This is Xi'an's most modern district -- excellent hotel cluster. Wyndham Grand Xi'an South (5 min walk, 500-700 CNY, views of the street from upper floors, best location); Hilton Xi'an High-tech Zone (15 min walk north, 450-550 CNY); Atour Hotel Dayanta (300-400 CNY, 5 min walk, stylish Chinese boutique chain). For the full Tang-themed experience: Tang Dynasty Hotel (唐代酒店, 400 CNY, Tang-style decor, but very touristy). Budget: Hanting Hotel Dayanta (200 CNY, clean, 5 min walk). The street is active until midnight -- staying nearby means you can walk back to your hotel after the lights show.

The street itself has Tang-themed food stalls selling tanghulu (糖葫芦, candied hawthorn skewers, 10 CNY), grilled squid, and pearl milk tea. These are overpriced tourist fare (20-40 CNY per item). For real food: walk 5 min east to Yanta West Road (雁塔西路) and Cuihua Road (翠华路) -- these streets have dozens of authentic local restaurants. Must-try in this area: Yangzhou fried rice at a local stir-fry shop (15 CNY); malatang (麻辣烫, choose-your-own-ingredients spicy hotpot, 25-40 CNY); and Xi'an Dishui Cave Food Street (西安滴水洞食街, 5 min walk east) -- a covered food hall with 50+ stalls. For a splurge: Tang Palace (唐宫) on Yanta West Road serves imperial Tang-style banquet food, 200-300 CNY/person.

This is a NIGHTTIME attraction. The street is unremarkable during the day -- go after 6:30pm (winter) or 7:30pm (summer) when the Tang-style lanterns and building lights come on. The light shows, street performances (Tang dancing, poetry recitals, acrobatics), and atmosphere peak between 7:30-9:30pm. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) evenings are most comfortable (15-22C). Summer nights are hot (25-32C) but the atmosphere is at maximum -- hundreds of visitors in rented Tang costumes doing photoshoots. Winter: 0-5C evenings, far fewer visitors, the lanterns look beautiful in the cold clear air. Rainy nights: the street empties but the wet pavement reflects the lights beautifully -- perfect for photos. The street is open year-round, free admission.

LET US BE HONEST: This is a 2010 theme park built for tourism and commerce. Nothing here is historic. It exists because Xi'an wanted a Tang-themed commercial district. That said: the light displays are genuinely impressive, the Tang-style architecture (while modern) gives a sense of Tang aesthetic, and the atmosphere is fun. The street is 2.1km long -- wear comfortable shoes. You will see hundreds of visitors in rented Tang dynasty costumes (Hanfu, 汉服) taking photos -- costume rental shops line the side streets, 100-200 CNY including hair and makeup. If you want: rent a costume and join them, it's part of the experience. BUT if you came to Xi'an for genuine history, spend your morning at Shaanxi History Museum, afternoon at Daming Palace or the City Wall, and come here only in the evening as atmospheric entertainment. Combine with Big Wild Goose Pagoda (walk 5 min north) -- see the pagoda at sunset, then walk south into the mall for the evening.
