Famous 3-degree lean predates Pisa by 200 years. Original brick pagoda with visible traces of original color. One of the most atmospheric Song sites.
How to Get There
Tiger Hill (虎丘) is in northwest Suzhou, 5km from the old city center. Fly into Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA, 80km east) or Shanghai Pudong (PVG, 120km east). From Shanghai: HSR from Shanghai Station or Hongqiao to Suzhou Station (25 min, 40 CNY, trains every 10-15 min -- one of China's most frequent HSR routes). From Suzhou Railway Station: Tourist Bus Line 1 (游1路) or Line 2 (游2路) directly to Tiger Hill (30 min, 2 CNY). Taxi from Suzhou Station: 20 min (30 CNY). Suzhou Metro Line 1 to Yangyu Xiang Station (养育巷站), then bus or taxi 10 min. The hill is a large landscaped park -- the pagoda sits at the summit, visible from the entrance.
Where to Stay
Suzhou's best hotels are in the old city (Gusu district) or near the gardens. Pan Pacific Suzhou (600 CNY/night, 5 min drive to Tiger Hill, set in a traditional garden, excellent breakfast); Suzhou Hantang Inn (250-350 CNY/night, converted Qing dynasty guildhall near Shantang Street, atmospheric); Pingjiang Lodge (400 CNY/night, on Pingjiang Road canal street, traditional Suzhou courtyard house, stunning). Budget: Suzhou Mingtown Youth Hostel near Guanqian Street (60 CNY/dorm, 200 CNY/private room, in a converted traditional residence). The Shantang Street (山塘街) area is the most atmospheric place to stay -- historic canal street with tea houses.
What to Eat
Suzhou cuisine is famous for its subtle sweetness and meticulous presentation. Must-try: song shu gui yu (松鼠桂鱼, squirrel-shaped deep-fried mandarin fish in sweet-sour sauce, Suzhou's iconic dish, 120-180 CNY at proper restaurants -- go to Song He Lou 松鹤楼 on Guanqian Street, operating since 1757); xie fen xiaolong (蟹粉小笼, crab roe soup dumplings, 30-50 CNY per steamer -- best at Tongdexing 同得兴); mi zhi ou pian (蜜汁藕片, lotus root stuffed with sticky rice in osmanthus syrup, 25 CNY). Shantang Street (山塘街, 10 min walk from Tiger Hill) is the best food destination near the hill -- canal-side restaurants serving Suzhou home-style dishes. For a splurge: Xinsongyuan (新松园) near the Panmen Gate serves imperial Suzhou banquet cuisine (300-500 CNY/person tasting menu).
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May): 15-25C, Suzhou's gardens burst into bloom -- this is Suzhou at its most beautiful. Plum blossoms in March, cherry and magnolia in late March-early April, wisteria in May. Autumn (September-November): 15-22C, osmanthus fragrance fills the air, the hill's maple trees turn red. Summer (June-August): 28-38C, extremely humid, stick to morning visits. Winter: 0-10C, the pagoda in winter mist is atmospheric -- fewer tourists. Photographers: the pagoda catches best light at 8-10am (east-facing). AVOID Golden Week (Oct 1-7) and any Chinese national holiday -- Tiger Hill becomes shoulder-to-shoulder crowded. Hours: 7:30am-5:30pm (summer), 7:30am-5pm (winter). Admission: 60 CNY (winter), 80 CNY (summer).
Tips for Foreign Travelers
The 3-degree lean of the pagoda is visible to the naked eye -- stand at the south-east corner for the best viewing angle. You CANNOT enter the pagoda -- it has been closed to visitors since the 1980s due to structural concerns. The hill is not just the pagoda: explore the Sword Pool (剑池, allegedly where King He Lu of Wu buried 3,000 swords in 496 BC), the Thousand People Rock (千人石), and the Wanjing Villa bonsai garden near the exit (free with ticket). Tiger Hill tea house serves local Biluochun green tea (碧螺春, one of China's top ten teas -- grown on Dongting Mountain near Suzhou). Combine with: Suzhou Museum (3km southeast, designed by I.M. Pei, free but book 3-7 days ahead via Suzhou Museum app -- this is a must-see, the building itself is a masterpiece), Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园, 2km from Tiger Hill, 80 CNY, largest Suzhou garden), and Shantang Street (walk there from Tiger Hill, 10 min, the best-preserved canal street in Suzhou).
