Longxing Temple

Longxing Temple (隆兴寺) is in Zhengding Ancient Town (正定古城), 15km north of Shijiazhuang city center. Fly into Beijing Capital Airport (PEK, 280km northeast) or Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport (SJW, 20km north of Zhengding). From Beijing: HSR from Beijing West Station to Shijiazhuang Station (1 hour, 130 CNY, frequent departures). From Shijiazhuang Railway Station: Bus 177 to Zhengding Longxing Temple stop (50 min, 3 CNY). Taxi from Shijiazhuang city center: 30 min (40 CNY). From Shijiazhuang Zhengding Airport: taxi 20 min (30 CNY). The temple is in the center of Zhengding old town -- the main gate faces a large square and the approach street is lined with Ming-Qing style shopfronts.

Shijiazhuang (30 min from temple): Intercontinental Shijiazhuang (500 CNY/night, international standard, near city center); Hilton Shijiazhuang (450 CNY/night, connected to a shopping mall); Home Inn Shijiazhuang Railway Station (160 CNY/night, basic but clean). Zhengding town has limited accommodation: Zhengding Ancient City Inn (正定古城客栈, 200 CNY/night, inside the old city walls, courtyard style, Chinese only). The best approach: stay in Shijiazhuang, visit Zhengding as a day trip. The HSR connection makes this easy. If coming from Beijing as a long day trip: take the 7am HSR, arrive Shijiazhuang 8am, taxi to Zhengding 8:30am, visit temple 8:30-11:30am, explore old town until 2pm, return to Beijing by 4pm.

Zhengding local specialties: Ma Jia Shao Ji (马家烧鸡, Ma family stewed chicken, the town's signature dish since the Qing dynasty, 60 CNY for a whole chicken, sold at shops near the temple main gate); Zhengding beng gan (正定崩肝, crispy fried beef liver strips, local snack, 15-20 CNY); lv rou huo shao (驴肉火烧, donkey meat sandwich -- Hebei's most famous street food, 10-15 CNY, the Baoding style is the most authentic). In Shijiazhuang: Yanfenglou (燕凤楼) has been serving Hebei banquet cuisine since the 1940s (80-120 CNY/person). Near the temple: the approach street (Zhengding South Street) has local noodle shops -- any one serving jiaozi (dumplings, 15-20 CNY for 15 pieces) will be good.

Spring (April-May): 15-25C, comfortable. Autumn (September-October): 12-24C, clear skies. Summer (June-August): 28-38C, the temple courtyard has limited shade -- go early morning. Winter: 0-8C, cold but the temple is fully open. Zhengding is genuinely off the foreign tourist circuit -- you will almost certainly be the only non-Chinese visitor here in any season. This is part of its charm. Hours: 8am-5pm (summer), 8:30am-4:30pm (winter). Admission: 50 CNY.

Longxing Temple is one of China's most underrated heritage sites -- four original Song buildings survive here, commissioned personally by Emperor Taizu in 971 AD. The highlight is the Great Compassion Pavilion (Dabeige, 大悲阁) housing a 21.3-meter, 42-arm bronze Guanyin statue cast in 971 -- the tallest surviving Song bronze sculpture anywhere. The sheer scale is overwhelming when you enter the hall. Other Song treasures: the Moni Hall (摩尼殿) has 422 years of painted murals on its walls; the Revolving Library (转轮藏) is an original Song rotating bookshelf mechanism carved from wood -- turn it to gain merit, a uniquely Song Buddhist concept. After the temple: explore Zhengding old city wall (portions of Ming wall survive, free), the Linji Temple (临济寺, 5 min walk, origin site of the Linji/Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, still active), and the Kaiyuan Temple bell tower (开元寺, Tang-era brick base). Shijiazhuang is not a tourist city -- but Zhengding makes it worth the detour.
