Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden

Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden (清明上河园) is on the west side of Kaifeng's old city. Fly into Zhengzhou Xinzheng Airport (CGO). From airport: direct bus to Kaifeng (1.5h, 40 CNY) or HSR from Zhengzhou East to Kaifeng North (20 min, 25 CNY). In Kaifeng: Bus 1, 15, 20 to Qingming Riverside Garden (清明上河园). Taxi from anywhere in Kaifeng: 15 min (15 CNY). From Kaifeng Railway Station: Bus 1 (20 min). The park entrance is a large Song-style gate with a plaza -- you cannot miss it.

Kaifeng Guesthouse Hotel (350 CNY, inside the park area, Song-themed rooms, most immersive option); Pullman Kaifeng (450 CNY, near Dragon Pavilion scenic area, 10 min drive); Kaifeng Home Inn near railway station (120 CNY, budget clean option). Kaifeng has modest hotel options -- adjust expectations downward from Xi'an or Hangzhou. The Kaifeng Guesthouse Hotel offers rooms decorated in Song dynasty style and is the most atmospheric choice, though amenities are basic (no elevator, Chinese breakfast only). Staying in Kaifeng overnight is recommended -- the night market experience is worth it.

The park has Song-themed restaurants: Dongjing Restaurant (东京酒楼) serves dishes recreated from Song cookbooks (80-120 CNY/person, dishes like Dongpo pork, steamed fish in lotus leaf, lotus seed soup). Outside the park: Kaifeng's Drum Tower Night Market (鼓楼夜市, 15 min taxi) is the real culinary destination. Must-try: guan tang bao (灌汤包, soup buns) at Kaifeng Diyilou (开封第一楼, since 1922, 40-60 CNY/basket); tong zi ji (桶子鸡, braised young chicken, 60-80 CNY whole); chao liang fen (炒凉粉, wok-fried mung bean jelly with garlic and chili, 10-15 CNY, a Kaifeng street food specialty). Also: the night market stall selling hua sheng gao (peanut cake -- watch them pound peanuts with giant wooden mallets, 10 CNY per box). For a proper restaurant meal: Huangjia Baozi (黄家包子) competes with Diyilou for Kaifeng's best baozi (40-60 CNY/person).

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October): 15-25C, best seasons. The daily performance schedule peaks in spring and autumn with 20+ shows. Arrive at 9am opening to catch everything. Key performances: opening ceremony at the main gate (9am), the Water Battle (水战, 11am, Song naval battle recreation on the park lake -- the front-row seats get splashed), Kaifeng Wedding Procession (2pm), Imperial Examination reenactment (3pm), and the evening light-and-water show (7:30pm, separate ticket or combo ticket). Summer (June-August): 28-38C, very hot, but the park has shaded pavilions. Winter: 0-8C, fewer performances, but the Lantern Festival (Feb, dates vary by lunar calendar) transforms the park with elaborate traditional lanterns. Hours: 9am-9pm (summer), 9am-6pm (winter). Admission: 120 CNY (day), 60 CNY (evening after 5pm).

LET US BE CLEAR: This is a 1998 theme park built on empty land with ZERO historical fabric. It is a FULL-SCALE RECONSTRUCTION of the city depicted in Zhang Zeduan's 12th-century scroll painting 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' (清明上河图), one of China's most famous artworks. The park works best for: families with children (who enjoy the performances), photographers (the buildings and costumes make for striking photos), and anyone wanting to visualize what Song dynasty daily life looked like at human scale. It is essentially a Song dynasty Renaissance fair -- historically informed but entirely modern construction. Budget 4-5 hours minimum to see all the performances and walk the full park (it is large -- 600+ mu / 40 hectares). Dress for walking. If you want GENUINE Song architecture, go to Baoguo Temple (Ningbo, 1013) or Longxing Temple (Zhengding, 971-1032). Qingming Riverside Garden is for the EXPERIENCE, not the authenticity.
